Job Description

At Trouts Fly Fishing, we offer customers an accessible environment, knowledgeable staff, and a consistent experience – both online and in stores. The eCommerce Manager will drive all online sales and fulfillment through our website www.trouts.com. The ecommerce Manager will work with the Owner and Chief Operations Manager to improve the online customer experience to achieve company targets and KPI’s. The eCommerce Manager will develop the strategy, manage, and execute the merchandising direction for our eCommerce solution and other digital markets.  The successful candidate will collaborate with key stakeholders including but not limited to Owner, Chief Operations Manager, Marketing and Brand Manager, and Manufacturing Partner/Affiliates to develop brand ecommerce strategy and execute initiatives to better serve targeted customers.   The eCommerce Manager will also manage the end-to-end customer experience for online sales. He/she is responsible for increasing monthly online sales.

The eCommerce Manager will be responsible for developing and implementing key metrics that measure the success of the eCommerce Business and presenting reports to leadership team.  He/she will take on a consultative role and work closely with the Chief Operations Manager and Brand and Marketing Manager, to build the strategic marketing direction to provide greater emphasis on digital channels in a way to deliver a unique customer shopping and brand experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop E-Commerce Sales and Digital Marketing Plan
  • Manage and execute day-to-day e-commerce sales strategy and programs.
  • Plan, implement, and analyze cross-channel online sales campaigns to drive business and product performance
  • Manage and maximize end-to-end shopper experience (questions, returns, customer service issues, etc)
  • website/ecommerce site functionality and to develop customize ecommerce modules to increase sales, conversions and profitability.
  • Identify and recommend product selection and merchandising opportunities that support e-commerce and web marketing initiatives

Experience and Requirements:

Preferred 1-3 years’ digital marketing experience in a retail and/or online retail environment that includes:

  • Ability to develop optimal customer facing digital and eCommerce product content.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging web design trends
  • Web project management experience, with the ability to both oversee the strategy for multiple projects and manage issues as needed at the tactical level
  • Creating, managing and publishing product copy and content in effort to provide a satisfying online purchasing experience
  • Business knowledge, innovative thinking, and sound judgment in the solution of problems or the pursuit of future business opportunities
  • Ability to provide and implement recommendations to improve user shopping experience, site functionality, personalization, and segmentation/behavioral targeting
  • Hands-on experience with Magento, Shopify, ExpressionEngine, Amazon, eBay and Adobe Creative Suite highly desirable
  • Genuine passion for online marketing and a strong understanding of online optimization, multivariate testing and ROI analysis, working knowledge of web languages a plus (HTML, CSS, PHP, and Javascript).
  • Working knowledge of Google Analytics and other web analytics platforms
  • Working knowledge of Google Pay Per Click and other online marketing platforms
  • A clear understanding and passion for fly fishing is highly desirable

Lefty Kreh Update

Lefty Kreh Update:

I spoke to Lefty for almost an hour this morning and he sounded great. Since there have been so many questions about his health, he asked that we publish this short note:

“God and my doctor have given me an extension. Some weeks ago I was put in home hospice care with three medical problems and it was assumed I’d be here a short time. Word about it went on the Internet and my computer and iPhone were flooded with wonderful and humbling messages. I read every one but regretfully wasn’t able to reply to most. My granddaughter used Facebook to handle messages.

My doctor and best friend experimented with medicines and said, ‘I going to try to keep you around.’ So far it’s working. I’m confined to my home, hooked to oxygen and have little stamina. My daughter and son are taking constant care of me and no father was more blessed.

Several computer projects keep me busy. There have been been ups and downs with some additional surgery, which is slowly getting better.

There is no guarantee on how long I’ll be here but am so humbled and grateful for all your wonderful messages.

Works directly with the President on communications to AFFTA members, media, affiliate groups and the general public. Produces content ranging but not limited to press releases, blog posts, bi-monthly e-newsletter, Fisheries Fund, AFFTA Member Benefits, IFTD Advertising, IFTD Show Schedules etc.

Responsibilities include:

Outbound material (press releases, membership letters, etc.)

  • Produces content and/or proofread documents that AFFTA and the Board of Directors distribute to members, prospective members, affiliate groups etc.
  • Manage and distribute press releases through MailChimp and other platforms.

ONLINE

AFFTA website and social media outlets (including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc.)

  • Develop and maintain plan of annual content updates.
  • Press releases, AFFTA news updates, trade news updates and Fisheries Fund.
  • Promoting new/relevant areas of website.
  • Weekly blog posts that are relevant to the industry, either via product news and innovations or conservation/politics/legislative issues that impact the industry.
  • Cultivate a solid list of online press contacts (bloggers, e-zine editors, etc.) that can easily be reached and engaged as needed when important AFFTA news is at hand.

Social Media

  • Develop and maintain AFFTA/IFTD Social Media Policy and Social Media Strategy.
  • Develop a monthly strategy for content on Social Media.

  • Update Social Media profiles with photos, videos.
  • Respond to comments, questions on Social Media.
  • Engage in fly fishing and/or communications-related conversations on Social Media.
  • Promote AFFTA members and affiliate groups on Social Media.

Traditional Media

  • Cultivate a list of mainstream and industry-specific media contacts that we can reach out to on a moment’s notice.
  • Work with communications staffers from AFFTA members (companies, orgs, etc.) to ensure proper promotion of the industry and AFFTA.
  • Be a dependable resource for reporters, editors and producers on industry news.

Other

  • Assist co-workers as needed.
  • Attend annual IFTD shows and/or other events at the discretion of the  President.
  • Manage Fisheries Fund Grant Applications and all communications.
  • Produce the annual report for the Fisheries Fund.
  •  Help with marketing and communication plans.
  • Research ways to improve services to members, with goals to:
  • Drive all AFFTA communications through social media to the AFFTA website
  • Improve affta.org focusing on content and navigation.
  • Help members understand the communications benefits of AFFTA and how we can help their business’ grow.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications or 3-5 years experience in related field.
  • Skilled in MS Office, Adobe InDesign and Photoshop.
  • Working familiarity with Google products and WordPress or similar content management systems.
  • This is a paid Part-time Position 20-25 hrs a week, Salary is D.O.E.

Lucas Bissett Joins AFFTA Board
Fills Vacated Board Seat

BOZEMAN, Montana. – Louisiana based fly-fishing guide Lucas Bissett has been unanimously appointed to the AFFTA board to fill a seat vacated by Shawn Combs.

Bissett, owns and operates Lowtide Charters LLC in Slidell, Louisiana. He was named Orvis Endorsed Saltwater Fly Fishing Guide of the Year in 2017. Along with his guiding experience, Bissett brings strong salt water conservation knowledge as well. He worked on Coastal Restoration for seven years at Louisiana State University and has put his passion for saving the marshes into his black mangrove restoration project.

Bissett’s appointment will take effect immediately. Bissett will need to run in the 2018 general board election for a three-year term.

“Lucas will be a valued member of the Board and brings a new perspective as a guide which we were seeking. His passion for marine and costal conservation will without a doubt resonate with the membership and the fishing community,” said AFFTA President and CEO Ben Bulis.

Bissett said, “I am thrilled to be appointed to the AFFTA board. Guiding is my business and I want to be a voice and advocate for guides in this industry. Tom Morgan Rodsmiths opens new shop in Bozeman, MT

Tom had never built a rod when he purchased R.L. Winston in 1973, but over the course of 45 years, he became an icon in the fly fishing industry.  Quite simply, Tom worked tirelessly in pursuit of building the perfect rod.

Tom Morgan Rodsmiths evolved from a dream of Tom’s while owning the R. L. Winston Rod Company from 1973 to 1991.  He always wanted to build a limited number of superior graphite rods for appreciative anglers. Rods not limited by cost or materials. Rods he would fine-tune until their actions were perfect.

Originally, Tom planned on making these rods himself, but then life threw him a twist.  Tom developed MS and would be unable to keep up with the physical demands of rod making, faced with a decision on whether to continue his life’s work, a solution presented itself.  Gerri Carlson and Tom met and became partners in life and in the Tom Morgan Rodsmiths Company. Over time Tom and Gerri added bamboo and eventually fiberglass rods to their lineup.  A small group of craftsmen ebbed and flowed through Tom’s shop wanting to work with and learn from Tom. They, along with Gerri, became Tom’s hands and brought his vision to life.  Many of them have gone on to build and sell custom rods of their own.  Tom also had a team of dedicated casters who developed prototypes under his watchful eye and gave him the feedback that he could no longer gather for himself.

While other rod companies chased a demand for stiffer and stiffer rods, Tom worked hard to keep the same progressive action that he developed while at Winston.   His rods possessed a smoothness and his signature light, lively feeling so prized by anglers worldwide. He sought designs that emphasized continuous taper blanks with a commitment to the importance of a sensitive tip. He added the best components he could find, from a carefully chosen group of suppliers committed to making the very highest quality products.

Now there is another exciting chapter in Tom Morgan Rodsmiths story. Tom and Gerri sold the company to Joel Doub and Matt Barber, two life-long fishermen committed to the preservation of the Morgan legacy. They moved with their families to Bozeman from Denver, and are honored to be stewards of the company as Tom envisioned it. As such, TMR will remain a small company, and will continue to provide the unprecedented quality the brand is known for. In support of what Tom created, the team of rod builders remains intact and all of Tom’s suppliers have committed to provide the same high quality components to ensure the success of TMR. The new shop is located at 608 W. Griffin Dr. in Bozeman, MT  59715.

Al Perkinson Joins Bonefish & Tarpon Trust Board of Directors

Al Perkinson Joins Bonefish & Tarpon Trust Board of Directors

Al Perkinson, Executive Vice President of Marketing at Simms Fishing Products, has joined the board of Bonefish & Tarpon Trust, a non-profit science-based organization dedicated to conserving and restoring bonefish, tarpon and permit fisheries and habitats through research, stewardship, education and advocacy.

“As fisheries and habitats face increased challenges from environmental issues and natural disasters, organizations like Bonefish & Tarpon Trust are more critical than ever,” said Perkinson. “By spearheading cutting-edge research efforts, BTT is leading the way to make our most precious fisheries healthier. And that is good for all anglers who care about saltwater fishing.”

Prior to joining Simms in 2016, Perkinson served as Vice President of Marketing for Costa, where he helped increase the company’s sales 1500% during his 11-year tenure. He also created Costa Films and has produced nine short films, one of which won the sustainability award from Sundance in 2012.

Perkinson majored in sculpture at North Carolina’s St. Andrew’s University before earning a master’s degree in arts administration from Columbia University. He began his career at Ogilvy & Mather Advertising in New York City. Before joining Costa, Perkinson was Vice President of Account Service at Henderson Advertising and VP Group Brand Manager at Bank of America.

Widely regarded as one of the most influential people in fisheries conservation, Perkinson received the Lefty Kreh Sportsman of the Year Award from Bonefish & Tarpon Trust in 2014 and was named Angler of the Year by Fly Rod & Reel in 2015. He is also a member of the Explorer’s Club in New York City.

“Al has been a great advocate over the years for our flats fisheries,” said BTT President Jim McDuffie. “We’re very fortunate to have his expertise and leadership as we shape our future conservation efforts.”
